What’s Up in Munich on Easter Weekend 2018

Hello everyone,

It is the easter weekend and this means 4 days of holidays. So most probably most of you will be away this weekend. I have a couple of tips for those who are staying in Munich.

You probably know about “Tanzverbot”. It is forbidden on Karfreitag (Good Friday) and on Karsamstag (Holly Saturday) to organize events with “fun character and dance”. It means there is no party, no concerts, no loud or happy background music in restaurants and bars. There is one exception to that, an exception that was won with a court battle which you will see as the first event. So Friday and Saturday are rather calm in the city and Sunday you can go partying, a party starts exactly when the “verbot” ends and there is even a festival on Sunday full day.

Here is what’s up in Munich this Easter weekend:

18:00 – Sat 01:00: Heidenspass Party

This is the only public party on Friday in the city. It was a 9,5 year legal battle to get the permission to do this party and this year is the second year it takes place. The event starts at18.00 clock with a short welcome and a review of the ten-year legal battle. Then the Monty Python movie “The Life of Brian” will be screened, followed by a public discussion. Then the blessing will be given for the dancing. Two parallel programs start at two clubs at 20:30. In the big club, the band “The Stimulators” will play and in the small club the program is called “Dancing in the Dark” which is standard and latin dances with love for gothic. From 23.00 on various DJs will perform in the big club and it will be a pure party. The party takes place on BLITZ Club, Museuminsel 1 and the entrance is free. For more information and updates, check the Facebook event.

19:00 – 21:00: Weekly Eye Contact

This event is about making eye contact with a stranger for an extended time. No talking, no gestures, just looking in the eyes. According to the organisers it is really a powerful experience
“During the eye contact, anything can happen. From emotions to thoughts, to wonderful connections and more. Every person has different experiences, yet the common denominator is that it allows you to connect with yourself and to others. It is an opportunity to be more present, to gain stability, raise your mood and to improve your confidence. Many also make good friends and the longer you do it, the more you get out of it.”

The event takes place at Baumstr. 8. Entrance costs 3 EUR. Check the Facebook event for more information.

19:00 – 20:15: Documentary Screening: “Dust Flower Flame”

“Dust Flower Flame is a documentary film about the life of Tahirih, also known as Qurratul-‘Ayn. Tahirih was a woman of letters who lived in the nineteenth-century, in Qajar Iran. Her name is synonymous with the emancipation of women and social justice and her life has inspired generations of women ever since, particularly Iranian women’s right movements.

Since 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran forbids any literature or discourse that portrays Tahirih in a positive light. Her name has been removed from the latest editions of history books published in Iran. Instead the State seeks to tarnish her memory by depicting her as an apostate and a prostitute in numerous state-sponsored publications.

Tahirih Qurratul-‘Ayn was strangled to death secretly one summer’s night by order of two high-ranking clergymen, upon approval of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, the King of Persia.” (Souce: Yale MacMillen Center)

The film is in English with subtitles. It will be screened at “404 page not found” (this is what the place is called), Corneliusstr. 2. For more information, check the Facebook event.

Although Monday is also part of the long weekend, I did not include it in the events list- because I haven’t found anything of significance.  But it seems it will be a warm day so maybe you take it as a lazy day to enjoy the parks of Munich, take a trip to one of the lakes or maybe take a Bayern ticket and go to Salzburg or any other Bavarian city nearby. Whatever your plan may be I wish you a great long weekend and a happy Easter if you celebrate!
