What’s Up in Munich This Weekend 15-17 June 18

Hello everyone,

Word Cup has started, so some of you are probably planning your weekend around the matches. If you want to know what else is up, here are some suggestions.

Friday – Sunday: Africa Days

A festival about Africa. There are concerts, dance shows, discussions, food, drinks and a market for shopping. The festival takes place at Theresienwiese and the ticket costs 8 Euro if you enter before 5pm, 18 Euro after 5pm.  Check the website of the event for more information.

Friday – Sunday: Orient Street Food Open Air

This is the festival of Oriental food. You can try various kebaps, falafels and other oriental dishes and enjoy the live music. The entrance costs c.a.5 Euro and the event takes place at Backstage. For more information, check the Facebook event.

Friday – Sunday: Kulturstrand

Kulturstrand is the public beach in the middle of the city. If you want to relax, put your feet to the sand and have a drink, it is the place to go! It is at the Vater-Rhein-Brunnen (fountain) just across the Deutsches Museum. There are concerts and live acts on most of the days. The program of this weekend is as follows:

  • Friday 17:00 – 23:00: United Colors of Feierabend: starting the weekend with music and chilled mood on the beach.
  • Saturday 17:00 – 23:00: Days at the Beach: party with electronic music
  • Sunday 21:30 – 23:oo: Screening of the documentary “A Global Joy” – life of European Street Musicians
Saturday – Sunday: City Foundation Festival

This is the highlight of the weekend. Munich is celebrating its 860th birthday this weekend. The celebrations will happen on 3 stages in Odeonplatz, Marienplatz and in next to Richard-Strauss-Fountain. There are concerts, shows, food, beer, exhibition of Bavarian artisan work, dance lessons, guided city tours. Richard-Strauss-Fountain stage will host the Irish music and dance groups. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday. An important note is wurst lovers – the old city restaurants (Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz) will sell weisswurst for 1 euro on sunday between 10 and 12. 10:00 – 20:00: Courtyard Flea Markets

Visiting courtyard flea markets is a great idea to do second hand shopping and get to know the neighbourhoods. On Saturday there are 3 of them:

10:00 – 16:00 : In Solln and Obersendling: Check the map for the locations.

10:00 – 20:00 Schwabing: Check the flyer.

15:00 – 20:00 Olympiadorf: Check the Facebook event.

11:00 onwards: The Biggest Picnic of the City

Munich organizes the biggest party of the city to celebrate the International Picnic Day. It will take place on the half-island of the Olympia lake. There will be a stage program with music, DJs and stands where you can buy food to add to your picnic basket.

19:30 – 21:30: English Improv Comedy Show
The Improv Scuba drivers, a local English Improv troupe, are back again with yet another show. A show built entirely on your suggestions. Everything you see here is unscripted and improvised. Bring your friends along and sit back to enjoy an evening of hilarity. Cost: Free. Donations only. The event takes place at Kooks, Geyerstrasse 18.
